CHARLES JARVIS SPEECH NOTEBOOK

At the beginning, Dr. Jarvis used notes. Over the years he refined his note taking and began to take notes on every presentation. These hand-typed notes are an instructive look at how he presented and recorded his speeches.

Dr. Jarvis's daughter, Pam, gave me his two leather-bound notebooks. One on his humor notes (psychology mostly) and the other on the notes he used while speaking on the circuit. Hand-typed, they show his observations and corrections over the years. For anyone wanting to speak as a professional, these show his careful attention to each of his talks. Really interesting to follow while listening to his talks. These notes are for real students of humor and worth revisiting often as you study Charlie's skills and approach to presenting.

The following four documents are the written notes Dr. Jarvis wrote over 30 years. They are HUGE, encompassing close to 1 million words between them. He passed before their completion so you may find duplication of stories and humor education insights. Their conversion to pdfs is ongoing. They will be made available when done.

ART OF USING HUMOR IN PUBLIC SPEAKING MONOGRAPH

The "Art of Using Humor in Public Speaking" is a monograph on a challenging and rewarding people skill that can be learned. The "Art of Using Humor in Public Speaking" was written to provide anyone interested in using humor with a concise look at the basics. It focuses on Public Speaking though, not stand-up comedy. It contains a lot of what Dr. Jarvis thought about the subject. He liked to say, "I'm not here to make you laugh, I'm here to make you think". He was a gifted Humorist and loved to make people laugh, but he also saw the serious side of using humor to change minds and soothe souls, if not but just for a few minutes. He studied his trade relentlessly and really focused on the responsibilities of the professional humorous speaker.

Add to that insights into humor based on my 35 years in Toastmasters International. Lot of speeches, lot of humor, it was an excellent way to observe what makes it work. Heady stuff, but not for the casually interested individual. So this monograph is a bit academic, but still delivers a lot important lessons you can use. It is also the text for all "Jarvis Revisited" Workshops. This expanded version offers considerably more insights into types of humor than what are shown online. It should be read slowly, digested and used in conjunction with the "Jarvis Revisited" Humor Study Guide.
